The Yankees will be just fine with Rivera as their closer next season. They won't regret not giving that role to Soriano at all. But will their bullpen be as good without Soriano pitching in a setup role? As I argued in a previous article , I think the Yankees' relief corps would have been all right without Soriano and Rivera.
David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain should form an strong setup crew. They'll be joined by David Aardsma, who will be fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. Boone Logan and Clay Rapada are fine against left-handed hitting. David Phelps probably will take the swing role of long reliever and spot starter. The Yankees could also pick up some low-cost options in free agency.
Former Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria is coming off reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and would be a low-risk, high-reward addition to the bullpen. Brian Wilson fits this category as well. Yet it still comes down to Rivera. Is he capable of pitching as well as Soriano did this season? Yes, he is. But the luxury for the Yankees is that they don't need Rivera to do so. They just need him to pitch the same way he always has.
New York, New York For all of the Yankees' success, no series meant more to the team's fan base than the World Series against the crosstown-rival Mets. The Oct. That marked Rivera's seventh career World Series save, establishing a new record. On Nov. Fond farewell The Yankees were still mathematically alive for postseason contention, but their game on Sept. In the final game ever to be played at the old Yankee Stadium, Rivera took the mound with a four-run lead in the ninth, making quick work of Baltimore with an pitch inning.
But that won't be the case. Bryan Hock of MLB. Write it down in big letters. I'm not going out like this. Rivera, age 42, had previously hinted that this might be his last season, and such a serious injury seemingly increased the chances that he'd never pitch again, even though his skills are very much intact. Thankfully, though, Rivera's not inclined to call it a career. Rivera was healthy when he arrived for spring training and threw two bullpen sessions within the first week after pitchers and catchers reported.
The progression was ahead of his typical spring training schedule which Rivera, by the middle of his career, was all but mapping out on his own.
At the age of 43, Rivera, his cutter as deadly as ever, earned his 13th trip to the All-Star Game. Rivera saved 44 games and posted a 2.
