As of Friday, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said there is a risk to being the first major event to go forward, noting other jurisdictions and other organizers will be watching what happens in Calgary over the next week. He said the Stampede can be a salute to everything the community has been through during the pandemic and a nod to all the work done by front-line workers.
Nenshi said everyone will have different comfort levels towards attending a major event and asked everyone to be respectful of one another. One safety measure in place is requiring proof of vaccination or a negative rapid COVID test to enter the Nashville North tent, the first such requirement in the country. Barnes said she estimated thousands of tests were completed during the Thursday night Sneak-a-Peek event.
She said Stampede would be unable to confirm if there had been any positive tests as they would be referred to Alberta Health Services.
Taylor Legris was in the Nashville North tent Friday afternoon waiting for the first musical act to start. Legris said she goes to Stampede every year and was crushed last year when it was cancelled. The opening parade went ahead on Friday, with the usual high production values, floats, miniature horses and marching bands. And it was a broadcast-only experience.
