We know for sure Phuket is larger, louder and more westernized than Koh Samui. You can expect better roads, modern beach facilities, lots of activities and ongoing nightlife.
On the other hand, Phuket also has tranquil, unspoiled beaches for those who like to travel off-the-beaten-trail and yes, you can find a hidden paradise where there is nothing but coconut trees. Phuket Town is a highlight for culture seekers and history buffs, and comes alive with atmospheric night markets. Koh Samui is laid-back and while it is also westernized in some areas, Phuket walks miles ahead which, you could say, gives Koh Samui a more authentic feel.

Being more developed, Phuket, hands down, definitely offers more activities to do and places to see. There are malls, plenty of shopping options, dining offerings, more culture and history, theme parks, and the Phuket Old Town is a popular site to explore among tourists of all ages.
In Koh Samui, there are more beach clubs than bars, more street vendors than shopping malls, and more restaurants on the beach than in the main towns. Island hopping is a must-do in Phuket. Head over to any of the marinas, charter a yacht and visit the world-famous Phi Phi Island or Similan Island.
Sunset cruises are also popular, as well as over-water parties that last the night away. There are plenty of options when it comes to private yacht charters as there are a total of 4 marinas in Phuket. There is no marina in Koh Samui, only private docks. If you fancy a chartered yacht, there are fewer options on the island as compared to Phuket, but you can still easily find a yacht tour that allows you to explore Samui in style.
For only a short boat ride away, the Ang Thong National Marine Park features over 40 islands to visit and explore. But of course, both islands do offer their fair share of things to do and places to see. Water sports abound on both islands, as well as hiking and trekking.
Thai cooking classes, Muay Thai events, and cultural shows can be found on both islands. Hotels and private villas are aplenty on both islands. If you fancy high-rise hotels with ocean views, you can find them in Phuket. Koh Samui does not allow high-rise properties to be built as an existing law states that no building on the island should be taller than a coconut tree.
The beautiful northeastern part of Koh Samui is dotted with private villas offering exclusivity and direct access to beaches. Never miss any important documents and processes. Both islands are warm all-year-round but Koh Samui experiences more of the monsoon season. The best months to visit both islands are between April to August since these are the sunniest months of the year.
In general, Phuket has more activities in store. And because Phuket is easier to get to with different channels of reaching the island, there are more tourists, especially those that stay for short periods of time. Off the coast of Phuket are some breathtakingly beautiful islands as well — Ko Yao Yai is one of our favourites, as are the nearby Phi Phi Islands.
Koh Samui is ab out half the size of Phuket, but sti l l packs a rea l punch when it comes t o things t o d o. Ang Thong National Marine Park sits just off the c oast of K oh Samui and is made up of 42 pristine islands that are perfect f or snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and wildlife sp otting.
On the island itself there are waterfa l ls to explore, mummified monks t o visit at Wat Khunaram temp le, elephant trekking and zip-lining. As well as the famous adult entertainment clubs that have become synonymous with Thailand. However, while Phuket is a safe destination at night, you do have to exercise caution in the evening. The beachside t own of Chaweng with its popular stretch of powdery white sand is the main party sp ot in Koh Samui. It has countless beachside bars and nightclubs, as we l l as the usua l adult entertainment establishments that are everywhere in Thai land.
For that reason Phuket has to be the winner. However beyond the beach bars and hotel complexes there is culture to be found, and the Big Buddha — a gigantic Buddha statue sitting at the top of Nakkerd Hill — is worth visiting. Although it attracts its fair share of t ourists t o o, K oh Samui fee ls m ore l oca l and Thai than Phuket. There are many picturesque temp les d otted ar ound the island, as we l l as busy markets and other sights. B oth islands have white sand beaches and crystal clear water that gives way t o a lush rainf orest and mountainous in land.
