Why is blood bending illegal

One of the clever little procedures used by Yakone is known as Psychic Bloodbending — a unique stance that requires almost no arm or leg movement, a stark contrast with the other modes of bending. In fact, in Korra's memories, she sees him use this on everyone in the United Republic Council, including Sokka, Toph and Aang, none of whom saw it coming or were even able to stop him until the Avatar State emerges a few moments later.

Yakone teaches this to his two boys, but only Noatak learns how to master the skill, as Tarrlok can't stand the idea of hurting poor animals. Aside from its lunar-based limitation, Bloodbending is beset with a ton of rules, regulations, and reversals.

First of all, ordinary Waterbenders can never bend blood; as it takes a special kind of focus to manipulate life itself. Next, the practitioner cannot take over their opponent's mind like they can their bodies, and, by extension, they cannot force their victims to perform any kind of bending for them.

Finally, they need to be more powerful than their enemies, otherwise, their techniques will not be as effective as shown when Tarrlok fails to control Amon. Another way to defeat a Bloodbender is by being the Avatar, but that's not really a fair comparison, is it?

A huge number of people have experienced the horrors of Bloodbending, excluding the characters already mentioned. In fact, Korra herself endures the abuse for considerable periods of time during the events of the First Book, but her recovery periods have always been quite rapid, even if her psyche was screaming out in terror the whole time.

This fact implies that Bloodbending could have potential uses, perhaps in medicine, surgery, dialysis, and so on. That's alright. Probably a smart move. I just wasn't aware they were currently illegal in any state.

I've always lived out west were the sentiment is generally "you can take my gun from my cold dead hands". I may be thinking of concealed carry. I think that's different than owning and purchasing. Not allowing concealed carry is pretty common as is purchase or possession of a gun without license and registration. I didn't think there were any states that you couldn't posses a gun as long as you were licensed and it was registered unless of course you live in a school, on an army base or in a national park.

Anyway I've gotten off track. I was just confused when you said US if you meant the UK or something. Got it. Yeah, my state actually just legalized concealed carry. The state I live in up until just recently was one of like the only 2 or 3 that didn't allow it. Maybe I'm just confused lol. We really did get off track didn't we. Add Your Comment. Avatar: The Legend of Korra more polls. Everything taken into account however, it is worth noting that every time someone who isn't a bloodbender or an Avatar in the Avatar State has resisted the technique, they were given time that they would not be given had it been the bloodbender's goal to immediately knock them out that way.

Hama's objective was for Katara to learn the skill, and Amon's objective was to take away the characters' bending. In VS forum terms, a bloodbender who's gotten another character on a successful grip, can most likely end the fight with a knock out right there, and then. I'll close with this statement. You described the resisting bloodbending section really well. I've tried in the past but it is better explained here. Hopefully, this helps with the confusion for people surrounding certain instances.

I feel the same way on the Amon, Korra and Mako part. There were more factors involved than just head on resisting it, and they shouldn't be ignored. That last paragraph sums it up perfectly; "Hama's objective was for Katara to learn the skill, and Amon's objective was to take away the characters' bending.

In the Avatar Extras from The Puppetmaster, when referring to bloodbending it states " Those who practice this technique open themselves up to madness. Do you think it actually messes with your mind over time? Would Amon and Hama be considered mad?

Could this be part of why Katara wanted it illegal? Is this also why it is seen more dark than lightning or combustionbending, two lethal, dangerous and destructive forms of bending - potentially to the user as well. That is a very poetic statement. I think in the end, everyone with such power opens themselves up to madness, because humans are really weak, and ironically they become weaker when they become stronger. This was also explored with Kuvira, who started her Empire with noble purposes, but was corrupted.

It is definitely the darkest bending style in that you enforce your own will over the free will of another human, and they're unable to do anything about it.

It is like possession in a way; in a hypothetical scenario I'd rather be shot or blown up than possessed by some demonic entity. Amon and Hama were definitely mad; the writers said that they wanted to show, with Hama, that no one is born evil. Sometimes circumstances push you to another end, and when you allow for it to happen, you've definitely lost your sanity in a few ways, in my opinion. Serial killers and terrorists are mad. Hama didn't stop at putting down the people that imprisoned her, she moved on to innocent civilians.

Amon did not stop with the bullies of the bending world. He took it too far. Something's off in their head because life wasn't kind to them. I have my own reasons for saying that but it even states it here in the wiki that at least a similar ability is required:. Nicely summed up. I would agree. Great job anthp! Also, this:. How did Mako briefly resist it then? Because I believe I provided very explicit commentary by Mike. Amon powered through because he was the more powerful bloodbender, whereas Katara was not even a bloodbender when she did.

They are not comparable scenes, so I find that a fundamentally incorrect theory. Clearly we're going to need clarification on both sides, since this obviously run's adjacent to the conventional wisdom like Ay's example. Will be back to see where this discussion goes. Note: I'm of the opinion that avatars have one of the best if not the best raw power of all the elements.

Now this doesn't always translate to their application of it, but it's still there. So I would be going at it from that perspective. So basically, hama was able to bloodbend aang who is a more powerful waterbender than her by feats and implications, heck she was even able to bloodbend Katara for a while despite Katara being more powerful waterbender than her who only broke free because of reasons I would address later on in the discussion.

Some of his victims claimed that Yakone performed Bloodbending, but Yakone denied this as there was no full moon during any of the time they claimed he perform any Bloodbending technique.

Despite this, Yakone was found guilty during a trial, and was sentence to life in prison. Before he could be taken to prison, Yakone performed a new form of Bloodbending; Psychic Bloodbending , in which the user barely needs to move a finger in order to Bloodbend.

Yakone Bloodbended everyone in the courtroom, including Aang, Sokka, and Toph. Yakone attempted to escape, but Aang managed to catch up to Yakone, capture him, and took away his bending. While Yakone was in prison, some of his servants managed to break him out. After having his face surgically alter, Yakone went to the Northern Water Tribe.

There, he fell in love with a local woman, got married, and had two sons; Noatak , and Tarrlok. Yakone eventually found out that both of them could Waterbend. So during a full moon, he took his sons went out to do some "hunting". He told his sons that he was a crime lord with the ability of Bloodbending.

He also told them that the Avatar was the one responsible for making him powerless. He even told his sons that they could help him get revenge on the Avatar. So every full moon, Yakone would take his children and teach them Bloodbending. Noatak proved to be a prodigy, while Tarrlok didn't have the stomach to use the technique. One day Yakone brought Noatak and Tarrlok in the middle of the day to perform Bloodbending without the use of a full moon.

Both of them were able to perform the technique without the use of the full moon.
