Why do suvs have rear wipers

Very disappointing and unsafe. Not happy. This may hold true in some cases… but it does NOT always work. Got a rental a few days ago, driving around in heavy rains the rear windshield was almost opaque on the Toyota Corolla Hybrid I was trying to figure out the rear wiper controls until I realise there were none.

Relying on side mirrors during heavy rains is dangerous. And does the writer serious think that anyone cleans their car every weekend?!? Just purchased a Audi A4 sline … love it so much but I am so annoyed at having to physically wipe the previous nights water off the rear screen with my sleeve.

Not what you expect with a luxury car!!! Automotive News by ABD. Notify of. Most Voted Newest Oldest. Inline Feedbacks. Richard J Ashton. I love my Passat but deplore the absence of a rear wash-wipe. Do you know why car manufacturers don't put rear window wipers on sedans? Rear wipers are essentially meant for vehicles with an upright rear window that collects dust, dirt, snow, etc. Sedans, with their sloped roofline rely on that same flow of air — this time over the roof and down the window to keep it clean.

Adding a wiper would create more aerodynamic drag creating slightly more fuel use. A wiper also requires an electric motor and a fairly convoluted mechanism and lengthy arm to make the wiper sweep across the glass from side to side.

On a wagon or other vehicle with a tailgate the motor, mechanism and other paraphernalia can be hidden within the tailgate. The same is true of a hatchback where there is sufficient space for all this equipment. There is no place to put it in a sedan, just a thin parcel shelf and, in most cases, rear seats that fold down.

But I see a lot of cars, new and old, that do not. Can they be shut off by the driver? It would be safer if both front and rear lights came on whenever the car is started and running.

Why don't safety advocates push for this? DRLs are required by federal law. If you see a vehicle without these it is a older than the regulations , b visiting from the United States where they are not required or c the owner has disconnected them — illegally. However, two things worth noting here;. So, a few crucial points: first, I forgot that these Skodas used the very clever Twindoor system, where the cars have both a trunk and a fully opening rear hatch, depending on how you chose to open the rear.

The reason seems to be in this statement:. For whatever reason, cars with opening backs are still somewhat second-class citizens in the automotive community. If the automotive world was rational, you could just add a rear wiper option on almost any car, but the automotive world has never been rational, and never will be. I have also wondered this and being the owner of a number of hatch backs I believe I have your answer.

It is the airflow under the car and the proximity of the rear window to the rear end of the car. Dirt is swirling up off the road. Case closed.

The A.
